A Place to Learn
Posted on February 23rd, 2010 in Consultant Learning
During today’s #NPCons chat, the suggestion for an ongoing consultant’s learning community was made by the brilliant Alison Rapping, as follows:
“Can we create our NPCons Resource Group; international, smart, passionate?!! BigTent, Conference Calls, Webinars – if we can do this much on Twitter imagine the possibilities!”
So what do you think? If we had such a group / place online to learn from each other, what could it accomplish? What would it look like?
Thoughts? Let’s do this!!

I would love to see this take shape!
Really liked the idea brought up in the (wonderful) #npcons chat about regularly scheduled skype calls.
Would love to see links of learning resources – not only techniques/approaches for working w/clients but also biz mgmnt resources.
I find personal stories/case studies useful… what is the path others have taken to move into this (relatively new) field and acquire a client base.
Examples of deliverable packages & pricing approaches would be useful.
Could also be helpful to have a forum like Q&A possibility
Will simmer on more ideas… Looking forward to seeing/participating in the evolution of this idea

I think that one thing i would love to see is a carnival of NP cons carnivals. I also think that it would be good share what Christina outlined above. One good organizing scheme would be the pollyanna principles so that ppl could see where they fit in.

Two ideas come immediately to mind. First the Trustees of Reservations (land trust in Massachusetts) has a great website for conservation organizations to share information and resources called the Conservation Commons (http://conservationcommons.net/). The second idea is to have monthly conference calls (possibly using skype) and fashion them after the Inner Circle (http://www.theinnercircle.com/). I was a part of the Inner circle in a past life and it was incredibly helpful!

Still chewing on the idea of the Inner Circle becoming a Consulting Circle. Here is a possible sample Consulting Circle agenda:
Welcome
Confidentiality (What Happens in the Circle Stays in the Circle)
Introductions
Review Member Commitments from Last Meeting
Educational Piece or Vision Quest Presentation
Burning Issue Round-Table
Commitments for Next Month
Close

I like the outline. Occurs to me that an component around identifying opportunities…for collaboration, networking introductions, professional development events or resources, potential clients…might be a worthwhile addition.

Also, glad to note that yesterday’s chat welcomed 11 new #npcons tweeters who hadn’t participated in any of the previous 6 chats. I’ve added them to the ongoing list of participants http://bit.ly/npcons Brings the total to 110 list members.

Finally (for the moment, anyway), is there a way to get RSS feed or notifications of new comments (not posts) here? Since comments are the only vehicle for most participants to add content, that would seem essential to this being a viable platform for the ongoing community envisioned yesterday.

Hi, I was able to partially attend the last 2 #npcons chats and wish to congratulate Hildy and others for making it such a fascinating way to share, learn and interact.
In the spirit of sharing and learning, I posted to my blog an immensely exciting non-profit merger process i had the privilege of supporting, and continue to support post-merger. Part of our role as np consultants is to assist the development of the sector, I feel, and helping to enourage partnerships and eliminate inefficiencies is key to this. You can view my post and presentation here

I would be happy to respond to any questions or provide insights to other npcons who face similar assignments
warm regards, elaine

The conservation commons site used to be a bit more user friendly (before the upgrade). I wonder if CharityChannel could play a role in this? Especially for the sharing of documents, checklists, samples, etc.
